After all this time not being able to see anyone it's a great feeling to be able to meet up with our besties! Keep it safe & FUN with your own DIY drinks markers, never to get mixed up with whose is whose.

What you need:

  • YARN, mix it up, go wild with colours and textures

  • Cardboard (old cereal boxes are great or anything found around the home) or a pom pom maker

  • A pair of compasses, for the cardboard option, (like you used to have at school but NEVER used)

  • Sharp scissors, small and large

  • Wire, or if you have some old hoop earrings

  • Super cute beads

If you have little to zero yarn:

A) Ask around family & friends to use some of theirs, I'm sure you can do a swap of some other treats!

B) Pop onto eBay, search yarn bundles or oddments, under used there is always a bargain to be had

C) Head down to your local Charity Shop, they usually have lots and you are helping a great cause. If possible, try to keep your DIY sustainable, as there is so much already out there.

Pom pointers:

Try to keep all of you poms the same size but totally unique; this way you won't get your drinks mixed up. I went for a variety of brights and pastels and of course I added some sparkle!

To make a pom with cardboard:

Use your compass to measure out two identical doughnut shapes. As a guide the outer circle diameter measuring 3.5cm, and the inner circle measuring 1.5cm. Personally I think its better to start with your pom bigger as the more you trim her the denser she will look.

Cut the cardboard doughnut out, including the middle bit!

Line the two halves of the doughnut up against each other and start loading them up with yarn, wrapping it around the cardboard through the hole in the middle. You'll need cut a length from the ball of yarn before wrapping, but take in sections so you don't get tangled!

The more you wrap the denser you pom will be, you will want to fill in the hole for a fuller pom. (See video here, if needed https://naomijadetextiles.wixsite.com/thethread/post/diy-sustainable-pom-pom-wreath)

It's entirely your design and playtime so do what feels right to you, remember this is a personal project with no one to please!

Cut around the outside, between each cardboard doughnut, being careful not to jiggle with excitement too much otherwise you may lose her.

Once cut all the way round, grab a piece of yarn long enough to tie around the middle, between the two cardboard rings. Be sure to double knot her so she doesn't come out.

Pull her out from the middle hole and voila you have your first pom bebe!

To make a pom with a maker:

If you are using a pom maker, you can jiggle with excitement much more!

Take the first half and wrap and wrap until you can't wrap no more!

Guide your yarn though the section to the other half and continue to wrap, again you can cut off this yarn and introduce other colours or textures.

Clip the maker closed and cut around the edge, the same as the cardboard, and secure with a length of yarn, before pulling her free to begin her new pom life.

Trimming your pom:

Now for the fun part! Once you've completed all pom's you will need to trim the edges to give her the roundness you require, I think the denser one lay nicer on the stem of your glass.

Now you can see your bebe's coming to life.

The structure:

I used garden wire on my make, this comes with a protective green layer. It was a bit fiddly to remove but I wanted to use what I had around the home.

Alternatively if you have some hoop earring you no longer want (and the opening fits past the stem of the glass) then you can use these!

I made my wire into a round and created a mini loop on one end to stop my beads coming off. I used my chunkier beads as I loved the look with the pom, I also decided to keep the each side symmetrical.

When you have filled her the other side will be looped that is free too hook through the other, once placed around the stem.

Now get your Besties round, catch up on EVERYTHING you've missed and drink the night away!
